4th-Nov-2016 09:32 pm - Thoughts: The Moonstone (2016)
cleanlife

The BBC broadcast an adaptation of The Moonstone this week. Before I watched it, I wasn't sure why they felt the need to; the 1996 version seemed perfectly adequate to me. Now, having watched it... I'm of pretty much the same opinion.

This one was longer (almost twice as long) but still didn't reintroduce all the elements that were cut in the 1996 version. It strayed rather further from the text (for example, giving Lady Verinder a deathbed scene with Rachel; very Victorian-novel, but not in the book or the 1996 version) and felt a little padded here and there. Perhaps because they weren't able to realise Rosanna's death on screen, there was instead an interpolated scene with Franklin Blake nearly drowning that went on for ages and advanced the plot not one iota.

As to the cast... well, they weren't bad, but a lot of them weren't on the level of the 1996 version. Which, given the 1996 version had the likes of Antony Sher, Peter Vaughan, Lesley Sharp, Greg Wise and Keeley Hawes, perhaps isn't such a surprise.

(I haven't seen the 1972 version, but looking on IMDB I see that the wicked Colonel was played by Colin Baker. And that there was a 1959 version where he was played by none other than Barry Letts, but that's probably long been consigned to the flames).

31st-Oct-2016 07:05 pm - Trick or Treat meme
cleanlife
In honour of All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting trick-or-treaters to my 'door.' Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post and...well, you know the drill. Treats can be anything that strikes my fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, one sentence fics, graphics, a few words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc) The more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!

If it runs to more than one season, then the seasons really ought to be called 'Class of 2016', 'Class of 2017', and so on.

Small incursion at Coal Hill, not many dead

Watched the first episode of Class. Not sure yet if I'll bother with the second. I can't think of that much else to say about it.

The story to fit this sensational headline has not turned up yet

Woke the other day with a sentence in my head: "Now, now, sir, for all I know the stained glass could have already been there before they broke in." Now all I need is the rest of the fic to go with it.

'Tis love, 'tis love, that makes the world go round

I added a few more prompts to the Unconventional Courtship generator. ResultsCollapse )

Seen in the Times colour magazine yesterday: an article about a new exhibition in London, based on a 1960s coffee-table book containing not-always-SFW pictures of young ladies (called, inevitably, Birds of Britain).

As the site puts it:

The plan, conceived that night in the Adam and Eve by John [d Green] and his friends and work colleagues David Tree, Terry Howard and Rowland Wells, was to create a fun coffee table book celebrating all the ladies who were key movers on the London scene. In the process, John would have the well-deserved opportunity to raise his profile outside the advertising industry.

(It feels to me like the premise of a Carry On film, with Sid James playing the photographer and the shoots ending in one scene of chaos after another).

What caught my attention was that one of the women was Juliet Harmer. She gets a few paragraphs in the article; I've put a scan of it here. I somehow don't think I'll be paying £1500 for one of the photos of her, though.

Or as Simms might say...Collapse )

  1. Came across an interview where one of the interviewees was Jessica Martin, from before she got cast as Mags. Definitely would have been improved by a werewolf transformation or two.
  2. Added a couple of prompts to the UC pairing generator, and got some results that I rather liked: Cut for spaceCollapse )

These took some time to come up with, mostly because of trying to think of answers of more than a sentence for the trope-based questions.

  • 'Power of the Daleks' is supposedly being animated. Probably best to take a grain of salt with this: this claim comes from the Mirror, the same paper that once confidently predicted the Ninth Doctor would be played by Sean Bean.

  • Mark Carne, the chief of Network Rail, thinks Victorian railway architecture is of much higher quality than the 'shoddy workmanship' of the 1960s, full of asbestos and dodgy concrete (paywalled, requires a Times subscription). Mr Adamant would doubtless nod approvingly. Though, to be fair to the 1960s, Victorian railway architecture wasn't immune from jerrybuilding; after 115+ years, you'd expect to be left with the more robust bits.

Now, if Network Rail are in the mood for sensitive treatment of heritage, and since Euston's got to be rebuilt for HS2, how about reinstating that arch?

17th-Aug-2016 08:05 pm - Fifteen Characters Meme
cleanlife
Memed from [personal profile] lost_spook:
  1. Make a list of fifteen characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment.
  2. Ask your f-list to post questions in the comments. For example: "One, nine, and fifteen are chosen by a prophecy to save the world from four. Do they succeed?", "Under what circumstances might five and fourteen fall in love?", "Which character on the list would you most want on your side in a zombie invasion?"
  3. After your f-list has stopped asking questions, round them up and answer them using the fifteen characters you selected beforehand, then post them.

2nd-Aug-2016 08:12 pm - Statistical oddity
samnjamie
Number of fics in the Unconventional Courtship collection: 100
Number tagged as het: 43
Number of those written by me: 3

Number tagged as femslash: 9
Number of those written by me: 3

Number tagged as gen: 5
Number of those written by me: 3

Obviously it takes a certain mindset to take a romance-novel prompt and write it as gen, but I'm still surprised that over half of it is down to me.

Also: if the fest is run again I somehow don't think I'll end up writing three slash pairings, even if it would make the numbers even tidier.
